MY REVIEW:

5 STARS

I am still loving these graphic novels. I guess I'm going to say that every time. I don't really understand all of what is going on or know enough to give a great review but I don't care, I love them anyway =)

There is all kinds of cray going on as usual. And I finally figured out what the white things in the woods are there for, there may be more too it later on but still.

 :

And Dana is in it of course and she's doing some under cover work with her jerk of an ex husband. NOT that kind of undercover work, the kind where your trying to figure out what's going on. Geez people =)

And Dana's son Cooper thinks Martha is a hero and a monster but in a good way, which he's right. One night she is watching Cooper and his little friend Jordan (she's a little girl that is a reviver like Martha) while Dana goes out on a date.

On the way to take Jordan home, Martha runs into some weirdness. Jordan keeps talking about hearing THEM. Well, THEM are the white things in the woods and they are telling Jordan she should never have came back from the dead. I'm guessing that's true, obviously right?

Jordan just wants to go with them but . . . Martha doesn't want her to do that.

 :

Jordan pops out Martha's eye and runs off. DON'T WORRY, the eye pops back in and Martha heals. All of the revivers can heal as far as I understand it.

Anyway, Martha doesn't stop, she will not let the white things get Jordan.

 :

I think after all is said and done, Martha should have let the white things take Jordan. Because Jordan goes off the deep end, cutting off her eyelids and freaking her parents out. Then they send her away. Sigh. . .

 :

I wonder where all of this is going? I wonder what they are going to do with Jordan at the place her parents took her?

I guess I will find out . . .

Gemina by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Moving to a space station at the edge of the galaxy was always going to be the death of Hanna’s social life. Nobody said it might actually get her killed.

The saga that began with Illuminae continues on board the space station Heimdall, where two new characters will confront the next wave of BeiTech’s assault. Hanna is the station captain’s pampered daughter, Nik the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair are struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy’s most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and the Hypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion.

When an elite BeiTech team invades the station, Hanna and Nik are thrown together to defend their home. But alien predators are picking off the station residents one by one, and a malfunction in the station’s wormhole means the space-time continuum may be ripped in two before dinner. Soon Hanna and Nik aren’t just fighting for their own survival. The fate of everyone on the Hypatia—and possibly the known universe—is in their hands.

But relax. They’ve totally got this. They hope. @goodreads

 :

I wanted to do this big thing. I immediately took the cover off to see what the hardback looked like and loved it. I even painted my nails blue to go with the book and I had on blue lipstick but you could still see my stupid fever blister. . . so. . . the kiss I was going to blow, just No. So the lipstick I put beside the book. Everything is so beautiful blue! ♥

This book blew me away!

I loved Gemina even more then I loved Illuminae!! MILD SPOILERS

The world these authors have created with these books are so freaking awesome, I. CAN'T. EVEN!

AND . . . the way the book in set up inside is just beyond!!!!! Anyone who has seen it knows what I mean. I will leave a couple of pictures at the end of the review.

I love Hanna Donnelly and Nik Malikov! I loved Jackson to a certain extent but there are things . . . .

I also loved Nik's cousin Ella. Hanna, Nik and Ella are just awesome in this book. THIS book made me cry and then say what the, then cry some more!

So, Hanna is the station captain's daughter and he actually trained her to be a bad @ss girl. Although, she is on a drug and I won't even go into how they get this drug because of THINGS again. She knows what she's doing and she's not some druggie or something. Nik is her supplier and friend. She's also got a little something going on with Jackson but it's not some weird triangle thing. There isn't any time for all that with the cray that starts happening on this ship!

Some bad people come on board and start killing people left and right. They have this insane plan and well it sort of goes way out in left field. <--(or left space) Between Hanna fighting back and picking people off to little alien things killing people, they can't seem to get the upper hand.

This book was action packed and crazy stuff is going on. We have wormholes and other stuff I can't say as well.

If you loved Illuminae I don't see how you can NOT love this book as well. Like I said, I love it even more but I love them both so it doesn't really matter. Um, where's the next one?

There is a comedic part about this song someone virused <--- is that a word? into the mainframe and it comes on in the elevators and everywhere. It's something about licking someone's lollipop!

Donnelly, C: Yes. I couldn't help but notice a rather obnoxious pop song playing through the elevator PA on the way to meet with strategy this morning. Now, my daughter insists on informing me daily that my taste in music is not exactly "chill."

Grant, I: Ha! My daughter says the same to me.

Donnelly, C: But then I noticed the same song playing when I got on the elevators to Reactor Control twenty minutes ago.

Grant, I: Yeah, it's playing on all the elevators.

Donnelly, C: It's playing on all the elevators, Isaac. Constantly

Grant, I: Yeah, I know. It's the new Lexi Blue single, Kady loves her.

Donnelly, C: What the devil is it doing playing on my elevators?

Grant, I: One of the maintenance guys got sent some malware. It's a marketing ploy from Blue's recording company. Erases any audio file data it can find and implants the new single instead.

Donnelly, C: Don't we have defenses against that kind of thing?

Grant, I: Yeah. It's one of these new-wave Trojans. Mutating virus. Kind of clever, actually.

Donnelly, C: Have you listened to the lyrics? I couldn't understand half of them, but the bits I caught sounded a little. . . risque.

Grant, I: Um. Yeah. The title kinda gives it away.

Donnelly, C: Dare I ask?

Grant, I: Let's just say it has to do with lollipops. And the licking thereof.

Donnelly, C: Jesus Christ, Isaac. I know you're under pressure, but-

Grant, I: I know, I know.

Donnelly, C: Please see to it. I'm losing enough sleep over my daughter dating one of my junior officers without overhearing her singing about licking lollipops in the shower.

I wish this series would go on until the end of time!

Ghost Light Road by Adam Light

A group of thrill seekers learn that looking for terror is a whole lot more fun than finding it in Adam Light's GHOST LIGHT ROAD, a short story selection from Bad Apples: Five Slices of Halloween Horror.@goodreads

MY REVIEW:

4 STARS

HOLY SHITE BALLS! This short story was creepy as hell. Lol

Bill decides to go out for Halloween with his sister and her friends. They are just going to go cruising up to Ghost Light Road and see if they will see a ghost.

 :

Pfft! Don't these people watch scary movies? I mean really watch scary movies. You don't go up some old road in the middle of the - just forget it.

So here they are trying to turn around in the road and head back home at one point, but the car won't go. I mean it's running but it won't go. Soooooooooo . . . Bill and Cassie, one of the friends, take off down the road leaving Justin and Bill's sister Monica with the car. God!!!!!!!!!!

They see this creepy old house and some creepy old building. Cassie wants to get out of there because she's feels something is off. Ya, think????? At least she had a brain cell before .........

 :

Then all of the sudden Cassie is gone and Bill is wandering around in the building. There is some creepy man inside and a bunch of creepy kids.

 :

Turns out all of the friends are there and it's not a good story for any of them but Bill. He gets out alive, but he has to keep up his end of the bargain. That's all I'm saying.

If you like a short story with some gore and freaky stuff, here you go. It's on kindle unlimited at this time too.

The Secret Language of Dogs by Victoria Stilwell

World-renowned trainer and star of Animal Planet's It's Me or the Dog Victoria Stilwell reveals the secret language of dogs, allowing owners to recognize what their dogs are trying to say, then effectively communicate and change their dogs' behavior for a better-behaved and happier pooch.
Victoria Stilwell is a well-loved and trusted name in America's pet media, winning over audiences with her SuperNanny-like British mannerisms on her Animal Planet show, It's Me or the Dog. In this book, Stilwell uses the latest research on canine language and behavior to reveal what your dog is really thinking--and saying--through its body language, expressions, and actions. Unlike other guides to understanding how dogs think, Stilwell takes it a step further, providing training tips for changing your dog's behavior--as well as tips on communicating back to your dog. Filled with adorable full-color photographs and instructive line drawings, this insightful guide will make you a bona fide "dog whisperer." @goodreads

MY REVIEW:

4 STARS

I don't know if any of you ever watched Victoria Stilwell on Animal Planet's "It's Me Or The Dog" but I did and I loved it.

 :

This book is not about training but about a how a dog works. There are different chapters with sections in them. I have to say my favorite one was the Zoomies! =) This happens when your dog is full of energy and needs to burn it off, or my favorite is the after bath "thank God it's over" zoomies.

 :

Unfortunately, my Lucy doesn't get zoom after her bath because the front yard is just woods and mud and mulch, so, NO. And there is only one section of carpet in our bedroom area. She does a good bit of bouncing around on the tile in the kitchen and the carpet though and then this ↓

 :

There are many sections in this book under each chapter as I have mentioned. But, Chapter 3 - The Emotional Dog is a very good one. It tells all about different emotions like anxiety, jealousy etc.

 :

Dogs can suffer from emotional problems similar to those of people, such as anxiety, depression, fears and phobias, anger, obsessions, compulsions, and a broad range of stress-related problems. Canine emotion, however, is not complicated by irrational or rational thought. Human emotions are more complex because they have a greater capacity for imagining scenarios that sustain or exacerbate a negative emotion. We might think someone is talking about us when in reality the person might not have thought about us at all. Our minds do a great deal of story building that takes a toll on our emotions, whereas canine emotion is more like a young child's: raw, simple, and truthful. Dogs in a multidog household, for example, might fight one minute and then be best friends the next; the fight has been forgotten and the dogs move on.

The Chapters in the book are:

PART 1: THE SECRET INNER EXPERIENCE OF DOGS
1) The Loving Dog
2) The Thinking Dog
3) The Emotional Dog
4) The Sensing Dog

PART 2: THE SECRET MEANINGS OF BODY AND VOCAL LANGUAGE
5) Lateral Language
6) The Language of Socialization
7) The Language of Fear
8) The Language of Aggression
9) The Language of Vocalization
10) The Language of Pain
11) The Language of Aging
12) Strange Behavior Explained
13) How to Speak Dog

I thought there were some really interested things in this book about doggers. I would never know unless I really researched.

*I got a print copy of this book through the BloggingForBooks program*

And why wouldn't I ~ I LOVE DOGS ♥

City of Light by Keri Arthur

The first in an all-new futuristic fantasy series from Keri Arthur—the New York Times bestselling author of the Souls of Fire novels.

When the bombs that stopped the species war tore holes in the veil between this world and the next, they allowed entry to the Others—demons, wraiths, and death spirits who turned the shadows into their hunting grounds. Now, a hundred years later, humans and shifters alike live in artificially lit cities designed to keep the darkness at bay....

As a déchet—a breed of humanoid super-soldiers almost eradicated by the war—Tiger has spent her life in hiding. But when she risks her life to save a little girl on the outskirts of Central City, she discovers that the child is one of many abducted in broad daylight by a wraith-like being—an impossibility with dangerous implications for everyone on earth.

Because if the light is no longer enough to protect them, nowhere is safe... @goodreads

MY REVIEW:

4 STARS

 :

Wow, I have never read a book like this one before! I thought it was pretty awesome!

There are worse things in this world than the vampires and Others, and many of them hide under the veil of civility and lights.

I loved Tiger's character. She's bad to the bone. She's a dechet. She has little kid ghosts as friends. Bear and Cat are the main ghosts that are her friends and it was sad to read about why they are ghosts. But Tiger also has many ghosts that help her and others that are cranky but they help too. She can see them and converse with them and they can help her with weapons and such. It's so totally cool!

The shifters--with their greater strength, speed, and the capacity to heal almost any wound--should have wiped the stain of humanity from Earth. But humans had not wasted the many years leading up to the war, and bioengineering labs, which had initially produced nothing more than body-part replacements for the sick and dying, had gone into full--and secret--production. These labs had created not only an enzyme that gave humans the same capacity to heal as the shifters, but also the designed humanoid. Or dechet, as we'd become known.

It said a lot about humanity's opinion of us that we were given a nickname that meant "waste product."

Most of us hadn't come from human stock, but were rather a mix of shifter and vampire, which gave us most of their strengths and few of their weaknesses. We'd been humanity's supersoldiers--designed to fight and to die without thought or feeling--and we'd almost turned the tide of the war.

Almost.

But not all of us had been trained strictly as soldiers, just as not all of us were unfeeling. There were a few who'd been created with more specific skills in mind--chameleons able to alter their flesh at will, and who'd been tasked with either seduction and intelligence gathering or assassination.

I was was one such creation.

Tiger's shifter self was in the form of a white tiger. I thought that was cool.

 :

It doesn't show on the cover of the book but she is described to have hair the color of white and black, the colors of her cat =-)

You can read from the blurb about a species war that ended up tearing holes in the veil of the world and created rifts where the Others can come through - demons, wraiths etc.

Tiger and her ghosts stay down in the bunker where they were all made at one point. She is the only one left alive until she finds an old friend she hadn't seen in 100 years.

Tiger also saves Penny a little girl she hears crying in the night. Penny makes sure she saves Jonas too, he is in a group of people that are trying to fight the bad things. Vampires are all around and almost take them out before they get back to the bunker. Cat, the ghost, gets Penny back but Tiger has a hard time getting back dragging Jonas along.

After all of this, it's on. . . Tiger meets, Nuri who is a seerer and she tells Tiger that wraiths are taking children. Tiger can't let the children down and helps to get them back.

There are a lot of things going on in this world and it's beautifully written. I think so anyway. I can see this as a science fiction type movie. I think it would be awesome!

I enjoyed the book so much I have already pre-ordered the next one. Lol. I hope anyone else that reads it enjoys it as well.

Malice by John Gwynne

The world is broken...

Corban wants nothing more than to be a warrior under King Brenin's rule - to protect and serve. But that day will come all too soon. And the price he pays will be in blood.

Evnis has sacrificed - too much it seems. But what he wants - the power to rule -- will soon be in his grasp. And nothing will stop him once he has started on his path.

Veradis is the newest member of the warband for the High Prince, Nathair. He is one of the most skilled swordsman to come out of his homeland, yet he is always under the shadow of his older brother.

Nathair
has ideas - and a lot of plans. Many of them don't involve his father, the High King Aquilus. Nor does he agree with his father's idea to summon his fellow kings to council.

The Banished Lands has a violent past where armies of men and giants clashed in battle, but now giants are seen, the stones weep blood and giant wyrms are stirring. Those who can still read the signs see a threat far greater than the ancient wars. For if the Black Sun gains ascendancy, mankind's hopes and dreams will fall to dust...

...and it can never be made whole again.

MALICE is a dark epic fantasy tale of blind greed, ambition, and betrayal. @goodreads

 :

My thoughts . . .

Yeah!

I wanted to kill people seven ways til Sunday in this book! The damn bullies and the evil people. If you read this book you best not like anyone or anything because they are going to DIE! Well, not all of them, but still! You know how these epics go =)

Some of my favorite characters:
1. Corbin
2. Cywen (Corbin's sister)
3. Gar (stablemaster)
4. Thannon (the smith & Corbin/Cywen's father
5. Veradis

Okay, there are several more I loved but I can't list them all!

Corbin and his best friend Dath get bullied by this jerk named Rafe and oh I can't wait until the day he gets his. I hope he gets it bad! Watch, he will turn into a good person and I will have to like him!

Cywen is bad to the bone and takes up for Corbin beating the crap out of Rafe :-D But of course, Corbin doesn't want his sister fighting his battles. And it's going to be a little bit before he can start training to be a warrior.

Gar, the stable master actually starts training him early. Cywen also works for Gar helping with the horses. Gar is a wonderful person.

I love Corbin and Cywen's parents too! They are good people. And they have some secrets about Corbin which I hope will come out in the next book. Their father is a smith but he is bad to the bone too, well, so is Gar.

One day Corbin goes off because of (reasons) and he runs into some wolven. Then some stuff happens that endears Corbin to the wolves. But later on some bad stuff happens by some @ssholes and Corbin ends up with a wolven pup. He named her Storm. He also gets a little colt given to him by Gar who he names Shield and I was loving the part when Shield actually saved his life.

 :

There are a lot of things going on in this book. The author built up this world pretty good in this debut novel!

We also have giants, wyrms, elementals and other stuff. There is to be a God-War. You can read the book and find out what all that entails!

Veradis is too cool. He is sent over to another King to fight in his son, Prince Nathair's warband. He does a pretty freaking good job protecting the prince, but some things happen there and off Veridis goes fighting stuff because of stuff. And I'm not sure what is going on with Nathair at this point. I'm thinking all kinds of people in this book are being possessed by stuff. <--I love saying stuff!

Brina is a healer and she's cool. I love her crow, Craf too.

Like I said there are many characters in this book I liked and loathed. I haven't named them all. There is just too much and you should just read the book if you love epic fantasy books! I am anxious to read the next books because I don't know who else is going to die! God, it's like reading Game of Thrones or watching The Walking Dead! I'm going to start hating everything and everyone because if you like them even a little bit they will die. I think I mentioned that before but still. lol

Anyway, read it, enjoy it, rage with it and move on . . . .

Red As Blood And White As Bone by Theodora Goss ~ Tor Short Free at Tor.com

Red as Blood and White as Bone by Theodora Goss is a dark fantasy about a kitchen girl obsessed with fairy tales, who upon discovering a ragged woman outside the castle during a storm, takes her in--certain she’s a princess in disguise. @goodreads

MY REVIEW:

5 STARS

This was a lovely story! OMG! Okay, honestly I wasn't happy with the situation but it all came out in the end sort of . . .

Klara was given to the sister of St. Margarete when she was young. Her mother had died and her father didn't know what to do with a newborn baby. One day when she was a little older a man told her about fairy tales and gave her a book. From then on she loved fairy tales.

When she was 12 she was sent to train as a servant to Baron Orso Kalman. Klara didn't have it too good there in my opinion but those were the days. One night Klara found a woman on the doorstep. She was naked and had long beautiful black hair that covered her like a cloak. Klara just knew that she was a princess and wanted to help her. Klara's princess worked with her in the kitchens for a while until they had a big ball. Then things take a turn (for the better if you ask me). I can't tell you what happens but it was awesome.

I was sad at what happened near the end.

Later on Klara left and went on to do other things, but she never forgot her fairy tales.

Blister by Jeff Strand

They call her Blister. She’s a hideously disfigured twenty-three year-old woman, living in a shed next to her father’s house, hidden away from the world.

Jason Tray is a successful cartoonist, banished to his agent’s lakeside cabin for a few days of mandatory rest and relaxation. One night, while hanging out with a couple of the locals at a dive bar, he takes them up on their offer to go “see Blister,” having no idea what they’re talking about.

He peeks through the window at the most nightmarish thing he’s ever seen.

In the morning, he wakes up, hung over and regretful. He’s better than this. He needs to…apologize?

From the Bram Stoker Award-nominated author of PRESSURE, DWELLER, and WOLF HUNT comes a tale of fiendish secrets, ghastly crimes, and human monsters. @goodreads

HOLY CRAP ON A CRACKER! ******SOME SPOILERS******

Well, where do I begin! This book is cray and I loved it! Well, certain parts I didn't like but there was revenge for said parts I didn't like so it all worked out I guess =)

First off we have Jason Tray, he's a cartoonist and he's funny and pretty cool. But after these bratty little bastards keep throwing rocks at his little dogger, Ignatz, he takes matters into his own hands. I mean the parents didn't listen so he dresses up all covered in blood, fake chainsaw and fake severed head and chases them down the road. LMBO! One of the kids falls and breaks his arm. GOOD!

 :

I would say they got off easy because if someone is harming one of my animals, I'm going to jail for what I do to them!

Moving on, this makes his agent, Chuck mad and he sends Jason off to say in his cabin until everything blew over. The parents didn't press charges because they could care less about much of anything.

"All right, all right, I'll go." Hanging out on a lake for a few days actually sounded like fun. It might provide the inspiration for some cabin-themed strips. "Just between you and me, though-the kid breaking his arm was kind of funny, wasn't it?"

Chuck just glared at me.

 :

When Jason gets to town he ends up going down to the local bar and drinking it up with a couple of idiots. Then said idiots take him down to show him Blister. He has no idea what they are talking about but he goes along. They take him to a shed next to a cabin and make him look in the window. He is terrified by what he sees and leaves right away.

But the next day Jason is feeling bad and he goes back and talks to Blister's father and he allows him to go and apologize to her. She has her face covered in a mask and she accepts his apology. He finds out her name is Rachel. And. . .

her evil ex-boyfriend, Brandon, wasn't happh when she wouldn't have sex with him so he takes her to a cabin, dresses as creepy clown, proceeds to cut her face and take a blowtorch to it. Yeah . . . that's what I'm looking for in a boyfriend!

 :

Truth is, she had a fight with her boyfriend Nobody knows what caused it, but I think she was a bit too wholesome for him, if you know what I mean. He tied her down and went at her face with a straight razor and a blowtorch. Can you believe that? A blowtorch."

Jason and Rachel do strike up a great friendship and she doesn't even have to wear a mask around him. They spend time talking in her shed before he takes her out to do things in the world.

"What kind of incident?"
"Here, you be the judge. Let's say that these horrible little kids were throwing rocks at your dog, and you asked them nicely to stop, and then you went to one of their mothers and she didn't care. So next time they threw rocks, you burst out of your house with a fake severed head and a fake chainsaw, and you were covered with fake blood, and the kids flipped out and ran away, and one of them fell and broke his arm. Is that funny?"

Rachel was silent for a very long moment, her face completely motionless. Finally, she spoke: "That's fucking hilarious."

"I know, right? Thank you! Thank you so much!" I was becoming a huge Blister fan.

I really loved how Jason got Rachel to go out and do some things, even if she just sat in the car at first. People in the world can be so cruel. But they had funny times.

"Do you want a beef stick?" I asked. "Places like this usually have beef sticks."
"Is that an innuendo?"
"Oh, yeah. When I ask the ladies if they want me to buy them a beef stick from a fruit shop, they're all over me."
"Well, naturally."

There is a lot that goes on. There is a lot that we find out about the evil boyfriend Brandon. AND <--
there are more holy shite moments when you get to one part and realize something. No I'm not going to tell you but it was awesome! Well, maybe not awesome but you know what I mean.

Oh and said bad boyfriend also cut cats with razor blades and used a blowtorch on them like he did on Rachel. Nothing graphic, just tells about it. So yeah, him going up in a blaze of glory for many things does not bother me one bit.

I think a lot of people will enjoy this crazy book and it's also on kindle unlimited at the time of this review!

The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong

My name is Chloe Saunders and my life will never be the same again.

All I wanted was to make friends, meet boys, and keep on being ordinary. I don't even know what that means anymore. It all started on the day that I saw my first ghost - and the ghost saw me.

Now there are ghosts everywhere and they won't leave me alone. To top it all off, I somehow got myself locked up in Lyle House, a "special home" for troubled teens. Yet the home isn't what it seems. Don't tell anyone, but I think there might be more to my housemates than meets the eye. The question is, whose side are they on? It's up to me to figure out the dangerous secrets behind Lyle House... before its skeletons come back to haunt me. @goodreads

MY REVIEW:

4 STARS

 :

I thought this book was pretty good. I thought the blurb sounded good when it mentioned Chloe seeing ghosts! I mean the first ghost she saw as a child would have freaked me clean out!!

Later on Chloe is 15 and in high school. She has a breakdown at school, or so they think, really she just saw a ghost that keeps melting his skin and looking all creepy! But this book is not what it seems at all!

Poor Chloe finally gets sent to the Lyle House for "special kids". She has no idea.

No one would say what was wrong with me. They had me talk to a bunch of doctors and they ran some tests, and I could tell they had a good idea what was wrong and just wouldn't say it. That meant it was bad.

This wasn't the first time I'd seen people who weren't really there. That's what Aunt Lauren had wanted to talk to me about after school. When I'd mentioned the dream, she'd remembered how I used to talk about people in our old basement. My parents figured it was my creative version of make-believe friends, inventing a whole cast of characters. Then those friends started terrifying me, so much that we'd moved.

There are a small cast of characters at the Lyle House. Derek, Simon, Tori, Rae, etc. Some of them have abilities like Chloe and some of them finally inform her of what she truly is and that they (the supernaturals) are in danger.

If your looking for a young adult, somewhat creepy book then you should pick this one up. I'm holding myself back from spoilers =) And I really want to continue on with the series to see what happens with these "special" kids. There are bad people out there that want to do them harm!

A Torch Against The Night by Sabaa Tahir

Elias and Laia are running for their lives. After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.

Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars’ survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.

But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene—Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike.

Bound to Marcus’s will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own—one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape…and kill them both.@goodreads

MY REVIEW:

3 STARS

I just didn't like this one as much as the first one and I can't really put my finger on why. . . .

I still loved the characters though =)

I think Helene had to grow a lot more in this book and I feel really sorry for the things that happened to her. But, she is now a Blood Strike and she has to do what she has to do, or does she?

I have to say that my favorite character in this book that had some really intense scenes was Cook. Yeah, Cook. I'm not going into it . . . no spoilers!

This book starts right where the other one left off and Laia and Elais are trying to escape from the evil Commandant without getting killed. They are still on their quest to save Darin, Laia's brother and I'm not going to tell you whether they do or not.

There are some people that die in the book and  a lot of blood shed. There is also a sort of after life that I thought was really good!

I think many people will love this book and I am so glad for those that do, I hope I like the third book more than I did this one. Of course, I will re-read this one and try again.

Sorry this is so short, there is really not much to say without me spoiling every little thing!

Kira knows they're keeping secrets, but when she discovers Tristan's lust for blood and her own dormant mystical powers, Kira is forced to fight for her life and make the heartbreaking decision between the familiar comfort of friendship and the fiery passion of love.

MY REVIEW:

3 STARS

What do you do when you find out your whole life wasn't true?

Kira Dawson comes home to her mother, father and sister from boarding school. She's going to start going to the public school and trying to be a normal teenager. This doesn't happen. Oh, she meets new friends at school, gets in with their group. Has a little crush on Luke but he turns out to be more like a brother and she gets a crush on one of the evil misfits, Tristan. But is Tristan all that he seems? Is he really as bad as his friends? Possibly not.

 :

He was the kind of boy you wanted to comfort and to kiss, the kind you knew would break your heart yet hoped against all odds wouldn't. The bad boy with a soft heart, the sort of trap a girl knowingly jumped into.

I saw a lot of Twilight in this book (I love Twilight and that's not a big deal) and it threw me off at first. The blurb mentions Twilight, The Vampire Diaries and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I can see Kira being a strong female character like Elena in VD and Buffy. She gets told she's a conduit and she can do all of this stuff, she might can destroy the world. I think she handled it all pretty good and she does kick some butt in the book.

I liked the book well enough, I loved Tristan and I loved Kira's character. She is a kind person that takes on what she has to take on and does it good. There are just random things that didn't make this a 4 or 5 star book for me and I can't quite put my finger on it. Either way there are plenty who love the book and plenty who will love it more than me.

FYI: at the time of this review it's free on kindle =)

I might continue with he series later on because I do have a crush on Tristan and I love the concept of the Conduits. Hopefully I will love the rest of them more.
