Wonder by R.J. Palacio

You can't blend in when you were born to stand out.

My name is August. I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse.

August Pullman wants to be an ordinary ten-year-old. He does ordinary things. He eats ice cream. He plays on his Xbox. He feels ordinary - inside.

But Auggie is far from ordinary. Ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. Ordinary kids don't get stared at wherever they go.

Born with a terrible facial abnormality, Auggie has been home-schooled by his parents his whole life, in an attempt to protect him from the cruelty of the outside world. Now, for the first time, he's being sent to a real school - and he's dreading it. All he wants is to be accepted - but can he convince his new classmates that he's just like them, underneath it all?

Narrated by Auggie and the people around him whose lives he touches forever, Wonder is a funny, frank, astonishingly moving debut to read in one sitting, pass on to others, and remember long after the final page. @goodreads

MY REVIEW:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1346296

THIS BOOK! I am in love with sweet little August. The things this poor child has to go through during the beginning of his life with all of the surgeries to try to help his poor little face. And all the things he has to endure throughout his childhood with people in general. But he has a wonderful mom, dad and sister to help him through all of these things.

I'm not even going to try to type out what he has even though it's spelled out in the book because I will get it wrong anyway. It seems he has merging of two different things that have caused his face to look deformed. With all of the surgeries he can see, talk and hear, although at some point he will have to have hearing aides.

All the way up through fourth grade he was home school by his mother. He is exceptionally smart and he has a obsession with Star Wars :) He has done a decent job all of his life ignoring the teasing he would get from jerks at the playground or the scared inhalations of people when they first see him. Then his mother announces she wants him to attend a prep school this year for the fifth grade. He is devastated and scared to death!

He does agree to go when he gets to have a tour of the school and meet a few kids. His parents also told him he could quit at any time if it became too hard being around the other kids.

Little Auggie wanted to quit one time from some horrible things he heard but his sister Via talked him into staying on. Although, he had tough times from some of the jerk kids making fun of him, he did have some really good friends and so many things worked out for him that I was in tears.

Auggie was a funny, kind little boy and it drew people too him after they got used to him. All but one and that guy didn't matter anyway. What is sad is there are some really horrible adults in the book too that treat him like he's a freak. They say he doesn't need to be in the school upsetting the other children, he needs to go where there are disabled or retarded kids. First off, he's not any of those things, he just has a deformity and second, those people suck!

I'm so glad I read this book, I'm so glad for seeing it on a friends reading list on GoodReads! I think everyone would like this book!
