Playing the Part by Jen Turano

Lucetta Plum is an actress on the rise in New York City, but is forced to abandon her starring role when a fan's interest turns threatening. Lucinda's widowed friend, Abigail Hart, is delighted at the opportunity to meddle in Lucetta's life and promptly whisks her away to her grandson's estate to hide out.

Bram Haverstein may appear to simply be a somewhat eccentric gentleman of means, but a mysterious career and a secret fascination with a certain actress mean there's much more to him than society knows.

Lucetta, who has no interest in Abigail's matchmaking machinations, has the best intentions of remaining cordial but coolly distant to Bram. But when she can't ignore the strange and mysterious things going on in his house, it'll take more than good intentions to keep her from trying to discover who Bram is behind the part he plays.@goodreads

MY REVIEW:

3 STARS

Lucetta Plum's step-father is a gambler and like an idiot, puts Lucetta and the deed to her estate in a bet in which he lost. He's a really nice guy right? Lucetta is an actress and trying to live her life when she has to go into hiding because of said idiot step-father.

Lucetta's friend Abigail says she can stay at her grandson Bram's estate. Well come to find out, Abigail wants to set Lucetta up with Bram. Imagine that!

There are some weird stuff going on at the Ravenwood estate. You have cannons going off for no particular reason causing people to dive into the moat. Something in shining armor wandering around the castle, hidden rooms, secret identities, crazy goats.... etc and so on
.

 :

I must say the parts with the goat are the funniest to me.

--->EXCERPTS<---

Standing smack-dab in the middle of what had to be a very expensive Aubusson rug was...a goat. It as watching Lucetta with eyes that seemed a little wild. Realizing that the poor thing was obviously as surprised to see her as she was to see it, she took a step forward and held out her hand, intending to give the goat a reassuring pat.
She realized almost immediately that she'd made a rather large mistake, because the goat let out what sounded like a shriek, right before it lowered it's head and charged her way.

 :

Miss Plum was running toward him, her gown practically falling off her, as if it hadn't been fastened all the way up in back. She didn't seem at all concerned with the idea that she was giving him, and anyone else, an eyeful of her chemise, corset, and...charms-probably because she was running as if her very life depended on it, holding up the skirt of her dress as she flew ever closer to him, the lifting of that skirt giving him an unobstructed view of legs that were well turned out and feet that were...bare.
"Don't just stand there, Mr. Haverstein. Do something about your goat," she yelled as she pounded past him.
The word goat had him looking down the hallway, and sure enough, a goat was charging his way, and not just any goat, but Geoffrey--one of the meanest goats Bram had ever had the misfortune of owning.
What the beast of doing insdie the castle, he really couldn't say, but since Geoffrey held an intense dislike for females, or more specifically, females wearing dresses, Bram surged into motion, hoping to intercept the goat before it managed to catch up with Miss Plum.
Unfortunately, Geoffrey seemed determined to get past Bram, so with a butt of its head, it sent Bram sprawling and continued charging after its prey, bleating in a menacing sort of way.

FUN TIMES :-)

We find out the mystery at he end of the book, but I can't tell you if it was ghosts or people putting on a show. I did enjoy the atmosphere of the book and good ole Geoffrey!
