One Flew Over The Banyan Tree by Alan Jansen

This delightful book follows the adventures of a young boy's memorable stay at his cantankerous Grandmothers house after his father loses a top job and abandons his young family. Amusing chapters takes the reader through a remarkable panorama of adventures featuring the unique palavers and adventures of the "Breakfast- eaters" at an illegal shanty restaurant (which for want of a signboard is dubbed the "Nameless"), the ruminations of a tree-climbing canine philosopher who despairs of the human race, a dastardly election campaign, an elixir for becoming young again, headless ghosts, dubious scholars at a private school, and plenty more lovable incidents and adventures.

MY REVIEW:

3 STARS 

I thought this book was relatively funny. I thought the author did a great job with the writing even though some of the stuff I didn't quite get but I think that's just because I'm not used to some of the lingo in other languages.

There are a lot of funny scenes in the book and some that were like oh no, are we talking about this! lol, the one I'm most thinking of is the dogs being stuck together and I think everyone knows what I'm talking about. There was a bit of a section on this as well.

There were just other random things too. I can just picture the family going on about the different things.

Opening the bathroom door to do his morning wash and brush his teeth, Rohan was flabbergasted to find his sister Laura standing by the washbasin mirror dressed only in her underwear. Laura screeched out loudly in shock and anger, grabbing a nearby towel to cover herself better.
'You young scallywag! How dare you barge in on me like this! Wait til I tell Mother!'
'Who blooming well barged in? Why don't you lock the door like everybody else? And as if I want to see you in your silly old knickers and brassiere! They look a bit dirty to me? Hasn't Mummy told you to change your underwear every day? Mahan and I do!' retorted Rohan, angry at being called a 'young scallywag' and throwing in the 'dirty' underwear to jibe just to get even. Laura's knickers and brassiere were, as always, spotlessly clean.

Rohan's father lost his job by doing something shady and instead of trying to fix thing he slinked off and left his wife and kids! So they all have to live with grandmummy. This would include Rohan's mom Rebeccca, sister Laura, brother Mahan, and three-year-old sister Sussie.

They lived with grandmummy for going on two years when their dad, Rainier gets himself together, gets a new job and money and a home. Then he slinks back in to get them.

But while they are with grandmummy it was some fun times and not so fun times. I felt sorry for them because of what the dad did to them. They all lived in this little house with grandmummy and watched the rats walk around and the bugs. They lived in style before all of this happened.

Rebecca (the mom) hated living with her mom. Grandmummy was a tough old broad that is for sure! And Rebecca was so relieved that things worked out and she got to leave. Rohan really didn't want to leave and he described his life living there like Alice in Wonderland and all of the craziness.
