An Amish Heirloom ~ Four Stories

A Legacy of Love by Amy Clipston

Local volunteer fire fighter Leon King agrees to repair his ex-girlfriend Susie Bontrager’s grandparents’ antique rocking chairs for her future home with her fiance and is forced to acknowledge that his feelings for her have not quite gone away. As Susie spends time with Leon, she begins to recognize she is marrying the wrong man for all the wrong reasons.

The Cedar Chest by Beth Wiseman

Decades after inheriting her great grandmother’s cedar chest, Emma Fisher decides to pry it open only to discover a beautiful love story in the form of letters between her great grandparents. But as Emma immerses herself in their story, family secrets are revealed, and she must decide whether to share them to preserve family history or honor her great grandparents’ decision to leave them hidden.

The Treasured Book by Kathleen Fuller

For the past two years, Shane Broyles has felt God leading him to join the Amish. He’s staying with his friends Noah and Ivy Schlabach in Birch Creek, OH, where he is reunited with Lucy Fisher, an old friend of Noah’s family. Shane and Lucy have never revealed their feelings for each other, but when they stumble upon an antique Bible at a flea market, they feel drawn to each other and to the mystery of the contents found within.

The Midwife’s Dream by Kelly Irvin

Iris Beachy serves as a midwife in her district where she longs for a family of her own. When her friend’s brother Mahon Kurtz seeks her help in delivering the baby of two young teenagers who have sought refuge in their town, they begin to see each other in a different light. Unprepared for parenthood, the young couple leave their baby girl behind in an antique crib quilt resembling the one destined for Iris when she becomes a mother. Mahon and Iris come together to take care of the baby as they try to find her parents, and they begin to see new possibilities for their future. @goodreads

There are four different novella's in this book.

The first one is:  A Legacy of Love by Amy Clipston

Leon is a volunteer fire fighter and he does some other work on the side. He agrees to repair is ex-girlfriend, Susie, grandparent's antique rocking chairs. These rocking chairs are going in Susie's new home with her fiance.

Soon the couple realize they still have feelings for each other. But what are they going to do? They never should have parted ways to begin with but things happen.

The second one is: The Cedar Chest by Beth Wiseman

I have to say this one is my favorite because the author made a dedication to her grandmother who's old cedar chest she owns and I have my grandmothers old cedar chest. It has a special place in my heart.

Emma gets her great grandmother's old cedar chest. She finds a bundle of old letters her great grandparents wrote back and forth to each other.

I think this would have been a lovely thing, even if they hold a secret.

The third one is: The Treasured Book by Kathleen Fuller

I love this one as well, the finding of an antique bible by Lucy and Shane was wonderful. This story holds a mystery. And will Lucy and Shane finally share their feelings for each other?

The fourth one is: the MIdwife's Dream:

This book is about Iris who is a midwife. She is asked to help a young couple have their baby but as the young couple becomes afraid, they leave the baby wrapped in an antique baby quilt for Iris to take care of. Mahon helps Iris take care of the baby and what will it mean for Iris and Mahon? Will they have a happy ending?

I loved that these book all had to do with antique items. I would actually like to own all of the antique items mentioned in the stories, accept I already have the cedar chest.

The stories were sweet and I think anyone that loves Amish books will enjoy these short stories.

Thank you to BookLookBloggers for a print copy of this book!

We Are Okay by Nina LaCour

You go through life thinking there’s so much you need…

Until you leave with only your phone, your wallet, and a picture of your mother.

Marin hasn’t spoken to anyone from her old life since the day she left everything behind. No one knows the truth about those final weeks. Not even her best friend, Mabel. But even thousands of miles away from the California coast, at college in New York, Marin still feels the pull of the life and tragedy she’s tried to outrun. Now, months later, alone in an emptied dorm for winter break, Marin waits. Mabel is coming to visit, and Marin will be forced to face everything that’s been left unsaid and finally confront the loneliness that has made a home in her heart.@goodreads

This book was everything to me.

"'Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can."'

••••••••••

You go through life thinking there's so much you need. Your favorite jeans and sweater. The jacket with the faux-fur lining to keep you warm. Your phone and your music and your favorite books. Mascara. Irish Breakfast tea and cappuccinos from Trouble Coffee. You need your yearbooks, every stiffly posed school-dance photo, the notes your friends slipped into your locker. You need the camera you got for your sixteenth birthday and the flowers you dried. You need your notebooks full of the things you learned and don't want to forget. You need your bedspread, white with black diamonds. You need your pillow-it fits the way you sleep. You need magazines promising self-improvement. You need your running shoes and your sandals and your boots. Your grade report from the semester you got straight As. Your prom dress, your shiny earrings, your pendants on delicate chains. You need your underwear, your light-colored bras and your black ones. The dream catcher hanging above your bed. The dozens and dozens of shells in glass jars.

The cab was waiting at the station.
The airport, I said, but no sound came out.
"The airport," I said, and we pulled away.
You think you need all of it.
Until you leave with only your phone, your wallet, and a picture of your mother.

First off the book cover it one of the best ever. And the inside pages are beautiful too. The front page with the one light in the dorm room speaks so many volumes to me.

Marin is trying to make a new life for herself. She has a roommate in college, she's trying to get a job, which she eventually does at a wonderful place, she's just trying to live from day to day. She's alone while everyone is away for the holidays. There are a few left in the dorms but not many. And her best friend Mabel is on her way to see her. What is going to happen? Will Marin share the reasons why she left everything, everyone?

I can't believe I have had this book for so long and just now found out what a jem I had. It went straight to my favorites list. Is if for everyone? No. But I'm not everyone. I'm ME. It touches a part of me that made me feel happy/sad/hopeful.

Did I cry. Yeah. And that ending. I can't even.

How could such a small book pack such a powerful punch to me. I'm going to do some things that were in the book. Just some little things. Everything is in the little things people. EVERYTHING...

We got a cool poster in the back of the book!

I enjoyed this book but I do believe it could have been shorter with just the things that were in book. I'm hoping the next book will blow this one out of the water.

My favorite character is, Preet the bird. You will love him too! Trust me =)

I did love the other characters too. They were a lot of fun.

But for the love of all that's holy! WHY did I have to hear about Arram talking about his little boy peen! Yes, the teachers are supposed to give them the lecture when they are 12 and since he started the school younger, I guess they forgot about him. And then I had to read about Ozorne telling him everything about said peen!

I can't even people!

Hurrican Season by Lauren K. Denton

Betsy and Ty Franklin, owners of Franklin Dairy Farm in southern Alabama, have decided to put life’s disappointments behind them. At least in theory. Ty manages their herd of dairy cows, while Betsy busies herself with the farm’s day-to-day operations and tries to forget the longing for motherhood set deep in her heart. But when Betsy’s free-spirited younger sister Jenna drops her young daughters off at the farm to attend a two-week art retreat in Florida, Betsy’s carefully constructed wall of self-protection begins to crumble.

As those two weeks stretch much farther into the hot Alabama summer, Betsy and Ty learn to navigate the new additions in their world and revel in a home that’s suddenly filled with the sound of laughter and life. Meanwhile, record heat promises to usher in the most active hurricane season in decades.

Four hundred miles away, Jenna is fighting her own battles. She’d once been free to travel and pursue a career in photography, but all that changed with the appearance of two pink lines on a plastic stick and a boyfriend who hit the road. At Halcyon art retreat, she finally has the time and energy to focus on her photography. As the summer continues, she wonders how her rediscovered passion can fit in with the life she’s made back home with her two children.

When Hurricane Ingrid aims her steady eye at the Alabama coast, Jenna must make a decision that could affect both her and her children’s futures, and Betsy and Ty find themselves protecting their beloved farm as well as their own hearts. @goodreads

*Thank you to BookLookBloggers for a print copy of this book*

This book is told by the differen't POV's. Betsy, Jenna & Ty. Betsy & Jenna are sisters and Ty is married to Betsy.

Betsy:

She usually stayed in bed until at least six, but this morning she was restless, like animals get when the barometric pressure drops before a storm. It wasn't the cows, or the approaching hurricane season, or even the milk prices, which had dipped lately. It was something else, something she couldn't quite name. She felt like she needed to both run a mile and go back to sleep for the next three hours. It was energy and lethargy, anticipation and dread. Anna Beth would likely diagnose it in a heartbeat, but Betsy had always been good at pretending everything was just fine.

Jenna:

The babysitter was late, Addie and Walsh were flying around the house in superhero capes yelling the Batman theme song-"Da-na-na-na-na-na-na-Batman!" - and Jenna had just poured a mug of coffee when Walsh bummed into her from behind, spilling hot liquid down the front of her black Full Cup Coffee T-Shirt.

Ty:

Ty Franklin's mornings began hours before everyone else's. Every night before bed, he set his alarm for 4:30 am., an hour he once thought was only for late-night bar hoppers and graveyard-shift workers. When he became a dairy man, he saw that the darkest hour before the sun rose was actually one of the most beautiful in the entire twenty-four-hour masterpiece. He now considered himself a lucky man, awake to the day's first sighs and stretches.

I actually get up at the same time as Ty, I just can't sleep. I would like to see the world as he sees it and find my own first sighs and stretches.

Betsy and Ty live on a 500 acre dairy farm. They own Franklin Dairy Farm in Alabama. How lucky to have that many acres of land!

Jenna is a single mom and she gets an opportunity to go to a photography retreat. She's hoping to make something of this instead of working at a coffee bar forever.

Jenna proceeds to drop her children with Betsy and Ty for the few weeks she is gone. Betsy is actually happy about this because she can't have her own children.

The book unfolds with everyone's own storms and dreams they are trying to make come true or keep a reality. As the hurricanes come, we see how well they all weather the storm.

Great book!

Happy Reading!

Ella The Slayer by A.W. Exley

The flu pandemic of 1918 took millions of souls within a few short weeks.
Except it wasn't flu, and death gave them back.

Seventeen-year-old Ella copes the best she can; caring for her war-injured father, scrubbing the floors, and slaying the undead that attack the locals. Vermin they're called, like rats they spread pestilence with their bite. Ella's world collides with another when she nearly decapitates a handsome stranger, who is very much alive.

Seth deMage, the new Duke of Leithfield, has returned to his ancestral home with a mission from the War Office — to control the plague of vermin in rural Somerset. He needs help; he just didn't expect to find it in a katana-wielding scullery maid.

Working alongside Seth blurs the line between their positions, and Ella glimpses a future she never dreamed was possible. But in overstepping society's boundaries, Ella could lose everything – home, head and her heart… @goodreads

This was a fun book! I love Ella being bad @ssed!

Just as the nation planned armistice celebrations after the war came the most devastating attack. The flu pandemic of 1918 struck and in just a few short weeks from September to December, millions of people died. We all pulled together to nurse the sick and bury the fallen.

Except it wasn't the flu.

And they didn't stay dead.

Ella is of course a retelling of Cinderella. She is a maid to her stepmother and stepsisters. Ella's has some best friends that work with her. Ella is also the towns exterminator. They don't want to kill the dead so Ella does this herself with her fathers katana! Her father is home in a catatonic state after the war. But Ella does what has to be done and she does it well. She doesn't like it but it is what it is.

And she also meets Seth deMage while she is out riding the fence one day. He's the Duke of Leithfield and they hit off perfectly. He will be her Prince Charming of course. But he's a good guy that is still in the military and working to get rid of the zombies too.

Seth is with Ella on one of her missions and he finds out a little bit more about her.

Seth followed, his brow furrowed. "Why did he call you? Why did he not deal with it himself?"

"Because I am their exterminator." My position in the village was that simple. When you cannot face beheading the friend who turned up on your doorstep, even though they are salivating to take a bite from your succulent flesh, you summon the girl who carries the sword. The girl who was always different, the girl suspended between two worlds, neither servant nor gentry. Born a girl, but raised as a boy. Some called me Ella the Slayer, but it is not a compliment. I would give anything to not have to carry out the gruesome job that life had thrust upon me.

I loved the story and I'm glad it had the happy ending. Well, for the most part =)

Happy Reading!

I got this lovely little box from the author sent to my PO Box. It is lovely, although, my special newspaper was torn =(

I liked Ivy's character. She gets kicked out of the castle and ends up at a school to hone her magical skills. She has some trial and error at this school! Who doesn't?

I very much enjoyed the magic system and the characters. I think middle grade readers will enjoy this book!

The Ritual by Adam Nevill

When four old University friends set off into the Scandinavian wilderness of the Arctic Circle, they aim to briefly escape the problems of their lives and reconnect with one another. But when Luke, the only man still single and living a precarious existence, finds he has little left in common with his well-heeled friends, tensions rise. With limited experience between them, a shortcut meant to ease their hike turns into a nightmare scenario that could cost them their lives. Lost, hungry, and surrounded by forest untouched for millennia, Luke figures things couldn’t possibly get any worse. But then they stumble across an old habitation. Ancient artefacts decorate the walls and there are bones scattered upon the dry floors. The residue of old rites and pagan sacrifice for something that still exists in the forest. Something responsible for the bestial presence that follows their every step. As the four friends stagger in the direction of salvation, they learn that death doesn’t come easy among these ancient trees . . . @goodreads

I first saw this movie on Netflix & then I found out on GR that is was a book. I went right to Amazon to buy it! I loved it! I love both the book and the movie although I'm glad they left out the first part of the movie in the book. I didn't care for it.

And on the second day things did not get better. The rain fell hard and cold, the white sun never broke through the low grey cloud, and they were lost. But it was the dead thing they found hanging from a tree that changed the trip beyond recognition. All four of them saw it at the same time.

This is the story of four old friends who get together to go camping. Some of them hadn't seen each other in years and didn't hit it off like they did when they were younger. But Luke, Hutch, Phil, and Dom finally come to a realization they need to stick together, get over their shit and get out of the damn black woods. (Never take a short cut through some black woods you know nothing about. I don't care who is injured, you will be dead instead)

They come across a hideous monster and crazy arse people.

It's a book/movie you will either love or hate. I loved it because it's so messed up I couldn't not love it!

Cancer be damned, I'm writing a review!! Then of course I really need to stop for a bit.

Far above the crown of stars,
there lay a kingdom cast in shadows
until a daughter born of light
drove the night away.
And so the Great Dark waited
a thousand turns around the sun
and promised on its heart of iron
to once again return.
-"Origin of the Moon Goddess,"
The Cantos of Light

I loved this book so very much!

There are 4 POV's in this book: Ana, DO9, Robb & Jax

I loved these characters so very much too! I knew I would just from the summary of the book.

Robb is a royal who ends up with Ana, DO9, Jax & and their crew. Well I should say the captain's crew (who is a woman btw) I love that crew too. Yes, some die in unfortunate encounters with jerk holes and robots and what not.

Ana, DO9 and Robb are after the same thing. Get to this ship and to look for things they all need. Jax is helping Ana and DO9 even though they all get hell when the captain finds out. Supposedly there is nothing but fear about this lost ship.

Anyhoo, they all get there and yes, all hell breaks loose. Sigh.... Then most of them get dragged back to the Space Station by Robb's evil mother and more hell breaks loose and revelations people. I love when the ole revelations come out!

But that ending! No! I'm hoping some good things will happen in the next book. And now I wonder why I read books before the trilogies or series are even finished because I always want to know what comes next RIGHT NOW! Makes me wonder. And hopefully I will beat this cancer and read more books that are going to drive me nuts because I won't wait until the series is finished!

Once again I loved the book and I love love love love love love my purple stained pages from Owlcrate! Thank you!

Yeah, I have cancer?

So here's the update. I went to the oncologist today because I had some cancer cells show up.

He couldn't do the biopsy today because I was in too much pain.

Next week I go so he can put me to sleep and do a biopsy on my cervix & uterus and check my bladder and colon.

Then I get a ct scan with some kind of cancer dye.

Then I get some kind of surgery to insert some thing in my chest where they can easily insert the thing for my chemo and radiation.

Then maybe surgery.

Isn't life grand.

Funny thing is, I have been telling my doctors for almost a year I have cancer down there somewhere and they all just thought it was my mental disorders kicking in. Well, I showed them didn't I. My pap smear showed cancer cells when I went a few weeks ago and then I went Monday for the ultrasound and then today to the oncologist and you know the rest.

I will let y'all know as I go or until I can't any more from all that I'm going to be going through.

Thank you for your prayers.

I NEED YOUR PRAYERS

I had my example last week and this morning my gyn called me himself and asked if mom could bring me in for an ultra sound. He said for me not to freak out because he's knows about my mental disorders and stuff.

There are cancer cells in my uterus. There are no lumps or anything weird and my cervix doesn't show any cancer cells but the ones in my uterus are a worry.

I'm going to an oncologist this week and he will do whatever tests he needs to do. My gyn couldn't say what all would happen. He could give me surgery, chemo or whatever depending on his findings. I'm very scared and my suicidal thoughts are running on high as I can't handle life. Yes, my psych already called me.

I'm going to try to get through this visit and see what my options are and go from there.

I might be gone from here for awhile. I truly hope my blogging friends stay on as my friend since I won't be reviewing and that google doesn't cancel my free account.

But I think having cancer cells is more important than who's going to stay your friend and if a website is going to cancel your blog.

Any prayers will be greatly appreciated.

I will be back hopefully. I'm hoping sooner than I think and that this isn't something bad and nothing bad will happen. We shall see.

I'm going to be spending my time with my dog for now.

The Queen's Rising by Rebecca Ross

When her seventeenth summer solstice arrives, Brienna desires only two things: to master her passion and to be chosen by a patron.

Growing up in the southern Kingdom of Valenia at the renowned Magnalia House should have prepared her for such a life. While some are born with an innate talent for one of the five passions—art, music, dramatics, wit, and knowledge—Brienna struggled to find hers until she belatedly chose to study knowledge. However, despite all her preparations, Brienna’s greatest fear comes true—the solstice does not go according to plan and she is left without a patron.

Months later, her life takes an unexpected turn when a disgraced lord offers her patronage. Suspicious of his intent, and with no other choices, she accepts. But there is much more to his story, and Brienna soon discovers that he has sought her out for his own vengeful gain. For there is a dangerous plot being planned to overthrow the king of Maevana—the archrival kingdom of Valenia—and restore the rightful queen, and her magic, to the northern throne. And others are involved—some closer to Brienna than she realizes.

With war brewing between the two lands, Brienna must choose whose side she will remain loyal to—passion or blood. Because a queen is destined to rise and lead the battle to reclaim the crown. The ultimate decision Brienna must determine is: Who will be that queen? @goodreads

Magnalia House was the sort of establishment where only wealthy, talented girls mastered their passion. It wasn't designed for girls who were lacking, for girls who were illegitimate daughters, and certainly not for girls who defied kings. I, of course, happen to be all three of those things.

This book was everything to me! I loved it so very much. Was it full of action and fighting. No, not really and guess what? That's okay
!

I have to admit when I first saw the beautiful cover I knew I had to have it and then I read the summary and thought it sounded pretty good and I took the plunge. I just wish I would have gotten to it sooner!

Brienna is brought to Magnalia House when she was ten by her grandfather. Brienna couldn't think why he would take her from the orphanage and bring her to this school. She had no passion she could think of but he wanted to tuck her somewhere safe. So he told the Dowager that she could do a little bit of all the passions: art, music, dramatics, with and knowledge. Well, it didn't go very good. You're supposed to have one passion and study it for 7 years and see if you can find a patron who will get you started in the world.

Brienna ended up going through all of the passions and ending up with knowledge for her last 3 years. Her master was named Cartier and he was a mysterious man. When Brienna and Cartier started talking about Maevana, things started to change. Maevana has a long history of Queens and magic, but many years ago some of the things that helped with this magic was stolen away and the Queen killed along with any survivors. And the King that sits the throne to this day will kill of any rightful heir he might find. They are the Kavanagh family and there is one daughter in hiding, waiting to take back the throne.

When Cartier gives Brienna a book about the stone and some more of the history, she starts having visions. And when everyone leaves the school and she's left without a patron, she finally tells the Dowager about her visions. To Brienna's amazement, the Dowager said she needs to get her with a patron that no one can know about. She can't write to her friends, her grandfather, or Cartier and let them know where she has gone. For she is going to Maevana where is it very dangerous and get that stone to get the rightful Queen back on the throne.

Brienna's patron is a man with the last name of Jourdain ad he takes her on as his daughter. It's all very cloak and dagger stuff, but it must be done and he's very kind to her. And will protect her with his life and he did on the road back home.

"One thing you should know about me," he murmured, nudging his empty bowl aside. "If anyone so much as threatens my family, I won't hesitate to kill them."

"I am not even your blood," I whispered, surprised by his steely resolve. I had only been his adopted daughter for one day.

"You are part of my family. And when the thieves tore apart your things, threw your books in the mud, threatened you . . . I reacted."

I didn't know what to say, but I let my gaze remain on his face. My embers of defiance and irritation faded into darkness because the longer I looked upon him, my patron father, I sensed that something in his past made him this way.

"Again, I am sorry you had to see such of me," he said. "I do not want you to fear me."

I reached across the table, offering my hand. If we were gong to succeed in whatever plans we authored, we would have to trust each other. Slowly, he set his fingers in mine; his were warm and tough, mine were cold and soft.

"I do not fear you," I whispered. "Father."

He squeezed my fingers. "Amadine."

They had to change Brienna's name to keep her in disguise just in case. So he named her Amadine. And she also has a new brother named Luc. They were all very kind to her.

Luc works with Brienna to help her figure out how to get her visions of her ancestors back. She does get more visions and knows where the stone is and how to get it.

She finds out who her father is and that's not a great day.

Brienna also finds love in all of this madness and revelations she never would have believed. She finds hope and a family. It was just wonderful. But you have to read it for yourself to see how you feel as I am but one person.

Happy Reading!
