Life sucks, and then you
rot. At least that is the case in the world today with the disease
Dermadecatis going around. No one knows how it is contracted, but
whenever you have it, you rot from the inside, out. Lena’s father, Dr.
Alona, is a man with a dark secret, who discovered the “Black Sickness”
and was searching for a cure, until he was mysteriously murdered. For
months following his death, Lena lived isolated from the world, until
she is forced into a night on the town where she hears the news of a
cure. Could there really be a cure? @goodreads
MY REVIEW:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1381022663 3 STARS
I loved the premise of the book. A disease called Dermadecatis or The
Black Sickness taking over a person's body and it makes you rot until
you die! I would rather turn into a zombie if I had a choice!
The
beginning of the book had me hooked with the main character Lena and
her mom and dad at her graduation, when all hell breaks loose. Lena's
mom has the disease and her foot is rotting off, her dad is actually a
scientist that has been trying to find a cure. At the school her parents
get killed, no spoilers. It's really mysterious and I'm wanting to know
more!
No long after that Lena's best friend Kaley gets her to
leave the house and go to a sort of party where a Dr. Ravana is going to
reveal that he has the cure to the disease. He has a boy with him named
Joseph that he used as a guinea pig and Joseph is just fine, but he
seems weird. Isn't that always the case when someone has a cure!
At
this little shin dig Lena runs into a guy that was a jerk to her in the
past, his name is Jared. He says she needs to come with him because
people are after her, yeah, you being the jerk I'm so going to do that.
Lena has no choice when weird things start happening and people are
being attacked by something, the light is too bright to see what is
going on.
Lena and Jared end up trying to get to a safe house
because he keeps saying they are after her because of her father. He
always tells her he has some secret and knows things, but can't tell
her. This whole lonnnnnnnnnnng time they are traveling Lena is trying to
get the information out of him. She doesn't find out until toward the
end and it's really not that big of a deal. I'm not sure why he didn't
tell her. I hate to say but it got on my nerves. I was all excited to
know, but when it was dragged out for so long, I got annoyed. I wanted
to smack Jared a good one.
The one thing I did find scary is
some people out there that are supposed to be good guys are shooting
people up with the disease! Really? Makes me want to stay away from
these people for sure. And noooo I'm not going to tell you :)
I
think the book was decent enough, I think in the sequels the author
could really take this somewhere since it's a very interesting idea.
*I would like to thank NETGALLEY and BOOKTROPE for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review.*
