In a land ruled by a murderous boy-king, each dawn brings heartache to a new family. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, is a monster. Each night he takes a new bride only to have a silk cord wrapped around her throat come morning. When sixteen-year-old Shahrzad's dearest friend falls victim to Khalid, Shahrzad vows vengeance and volunteers to be his next bride. Shahrzad is determined not only to stay alive, but to end the caliph's reign of terror once and for all.
Night after night, Shahrzad beguiles Khalid, weaving stories that enchant, ensuring her survival, though she knows each dawn could be her last. But something she never expected begins to happen: Khalid is nothing like what she'd imagined him to be. This monster is a boy with a tormented heart. Incredibly, Shahrzad finds herself falling in love. How is this possible? It's an unforgivable betrayal. Still, Shahrzad has come to understand all is not as it seems in this palace of marble and stone. She resolves to uncover whatever secrets lurk and, despite her love, be ready to take Khalid's life as retribution for the many lives he's stolen. Can their love survive this world of stories and secrets? @goodreads
MY REVIEW:
2 STARS
I'm one of the few in the minority about this book. DON'T BE HATING ME :-(
I didn't like much of anything in this book until closer to the end. I liked Khalid's character even though he has killed so many brides. But Khalid never seemed like an evil person. When what's her head (Shahrzad) first met him I was expecting him to be this tyrant...um, he wasn't. So, something seemed a little off because really a man who can kill a Queen a day right?
Then you find out a little later that there is a secret he is hiding. See, I knew there was something! And even though I liked his character and some of the other characters, I still wasn't feeling the book.
I liked Jalal and Despina, they were funny and nice. :-)
And if anyone can tell me what is the deal with what's her head and Khalid. I thought I read in past reviews that he or someone raped her so I was preparing to skim that and that her and someone were having regular sex. I didn't read anything like that in the book. I mean I know I'm crazy, but did I miss something?

One of my favorite series!!! Seems like people either love it or hate it.
ReplyDeleteHey there sweet Donna :-) Yeah, it seems like they do. I was so hoping I was love it but we can't love them all. :-( I'm so glad you loved it though because there is nothing like that feeling of loving a book ♥
