Sixteen-year-old Anna Arden is barred from society by a defect of blood. Though her family is part of the Luminate, powerful users of magic, she is Barren, unable to perform the simplest spells. Anna would do anything to belong. But her fate takes another course when, after inadvertently breaking her sister’s debutante spell—an important chance for a highborn young woman to show her prowess with magic—Anna finds herself exiled to her family’s once powerful but now crumbling native Hungary.
Her life might well be over.
In Hungary, Anna discovers that nothing is quite as it seems. Not the people around her, from her aloof cousin Noémi to the fierce and handsome Romani Gábor. Not the society she’s known all her life, for discontent with the Luminate is sweeping the land. And not her lack of magic. Isolated from the only world she cares about, Anna still can’t seem to stop herself from breaking spells.
As rebellion spreads across the region, Anna’s unique ability becomes the catalyst everyone is seeking. In the company of nobles, revolutionaries, and Romanies, Anna must choose: deny her unique power and cling to the life she’s always wanted, or embrace her ability and change that world forever.
Sigh........
I should have known not to pick this book when more than half my friends didn't like it. But, I like to make my own decisions. And I didn't really like it. =(
In the beginning I thought it was going to be awesome! I loved Anna and how she would ruin her sisters magic spells. I didn't like her sister Catherine at all! She was mean and horrible to Anna the whole time. I mean I guess I can understand if your sister is always messing up your spells but I don't know. I still thought she was a jerk.
And then Anna being stupid messing around with Lord Frederick Markson. She just wanted to find love and she should have known, but you know how it is when girls go stupid about boys. Turns out she found out the hard way.
Anna is what is called Barren. She doesn't have the magical power of the Luminate. They test you when you are a child to see if you have the power. Well..... things are not all cut and dry. And Anna can disrupt spells, so what is she?
Anna ends up getting sent away, but she gets to go to Hungry with her grandmother. I loved her grandmother. Anna meets some gypsy's, specifically, Gabor and he trains her how to use magic.
I liked Anna's cousins too.
But, things happen and some people get killed and I guess one will find out what all happens in the next books in the series, trilogy? Unfortunately, I won't be reading any more of these particular books. =(

DeleteThank you =) I really hope you're one of the ones that loves it! x
Such a shame it was a disappointing read for you. I adore this cover, and the synopsis had spiked my interest, but might have to rethink my desire to read this one and research a wider range of reviews that I did when I first add it to my to-buy list. Thank you for your review.
